Rosary Request for PGK Thomas Badke

Rosary Request

This Rosary is a little different for many reasons.  PGK Thomas Badke died after a criminal altercation at his business last week.  (Details HERE.) Past Grand Knight Thomas was initiated into St Patrick Council #3129 in October of 1978.  He served well and faithfully our Order for 40 years.  His brothers from Council #3129 will honor Thomas this Sunday (tomorrow) at 5 pm at Wujek-Calcarterra.  This is right in the middle of District 24 (that’s our district.)  His Burial Mass will be at St Clement on Monday.

In the spirit of Fraternity, we’re asking everyone from Council 7018 to make an effort to attend Tom’s Rosary tomorrow evening at 5 pm.

Below are directions Tom’s obituary and the email exchange I had with current GK at St Patricks, Bob Skwara.  He’s welcoming us and the other Councils in #24 to participate and honor Tom.

Pray Without Ceasing

I was at church this week on Monday.  We were having a First Degree.  I was there just helping get stuff set up.  We had a good turn-out and I didn’t stay until the end of the ceremony.    As I was leaving, about 7:15 pm or so, I saw the light on in the Sanctuary.  I then heard the prayers in unison from across the silent church.  As they do most nights, a group gathers in the evening and offers prayers.

Standing there, listening to them in a mostly dark church on a cold January day, I couldn’t help but wonder if this is what praying sounds like to God.   We Knights send out many prayer requests for our members and their family’s.  We see requests from friends on Facebook that say “pray for me” or “keep me in your prayers.”  There’s something special about praying in community, everyone saying the same thing, at the same time.   Before our meetings, many of us gather and pray a Rosary together, in a community.

I have this great app on my iPhone, it’s called Divine Office.  It always starts out with the following introduction.

From ancient times, the Church has had the custom of celebrating each day the liturgy of hours.   In this way, the Church fulfills the Lords precept to pray without ceasing, at once offering praise to God the Father and interceding for the salvation of the world.

One of the many cool features is the “Now In Prayer” view.  It lights up the planet with people who are actively using the app (and therefore we can assume, praying.)

I’d like to see this same view with all the people praying in any format, in a community, in their car, in bed before going to sleep, in the morning before getting up, etc.  I suspect the globe would be awash in light.

“We have no command to work and to pass the night in vigils and to fast constantly. However, we do have an obligation to ‘pray without ceasing.’” This quotation from Evagrius Ponticus (c. 345-399), is a good reflection of the belief of the early Christians about prayer. In the letters of St. Paul we frequently see the injunction to pray ceaselessly, as, for example in 1 Thessalonians 5:17(“Pray without ceasing”) and Romans 12:12 (“Be constant in prayer”), and Ephesians 6:18 (“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit”). In the Gospels themselves, Jesus emphasizes persistent prayer, as in Luke 18 where Jesus taught the disciples a parable “to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.” These passages of Scripture were taken very seriously by the early Church and much discussion was given to this idea and how it could be achieved.”  (Taken from Portsmouth Abbey website document here.)

It’s with sadness I must inform you that David Sitek has gone home.  David was the father-in-law of Pat and Rose Miller’s son Patrick.  The family has asked the Knights to pray the Rosary with them.  David had deep ties to the community and St Clement parish.  Please make an effort to attend and honor the family on Thursday evening at 7 pm.

You know, sometimes it really is the little things that bring the most joy.  Our crack Advocate Karrie Illner noticed our By-Laws were woefully out of date.  By-Laws need to be reviewed and voted on every ten years.  Karrie got Mike McKinnon involved to update and edit our last published By-Laws.  Yesterday, a big box of printed By-Laws showed up at the house.  They look nice.

One of the first pages is a current list of officers.  I’ve been gathering up all the picture albums in various cabinets in our Knights room at St Clement.  I’ve been scanning and posting them out here.  I figure it’s part of the history and having it available online is better than a photo album no one sees in a locked cabinet.  The reason I mention it is because last night, I picked up the “next” album.  It was from 1977.

Going through all those old pictures and letters of congratulations, it occurred to me, many of the original guys are still around.   Some of the guys have gone home and others are MIA.  I wonder what the officer’s list will look like in 10 years?  I wonder if anyone will notice the By-Laws actually need to be updated.

Someone make a note for fall for 2027.   I’ll bring these to the Knights room.  Please pick up a copy and review.

As you may already be aware, Tony Vittorini passed away January 2nd.  Tony was the Knights of Columbus State Secretary for Michigan.  Tony was also good friends with Tony Nardozzi and a friend of Council 7018.  There will be a Rosary for him this Friday (tomorrow) at Wujek-Calcaterra.  I suspect many Councils and State officers will be in attendance and participate.  If you can make it, please do.  If you can’t make it, please remember Tony, his wife Sue and their large family in your immediate prayers.

Obituary for Mary Jane Pardon (link)

Mary Jane Pardon, a lifelong resident of Berville, MI passed away at home on Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at the age of 87 years.

Mary was born August 26, 1930, in Mt. Clemens, MI to the late Remi and Mary Christian. She married Milo “Dick” Pardon on February 26, 1949, and enjoyed 65 years of marriage until Dick’s passing in 2014. Mary enjoyed painting Christmas cookies with her grandchildren and had a gift for selling raffle tickets. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

CIS – BUILDING THE DOMESTIC CHURCH SERIES

Since 1948 CIS has been the major evangelical arm of the Knights of Columbus. Through multiple booklet series and various media formats, CIS makes our Catholic faith accessible and provides continuing tools for catechesis and spiritual formation. Knights of Columbus councils should use the complete library of CIS materials in their membership formation as well as promote them for parish continuing education, youth catechesis and spiritual study groups.

The Last Hurrah!

Last Meeting of 2017 on Thursday

Just a reminder, we’re having the last meeting of the year tomorrow night Dec 21st at 7 pm at St Clement.  Please join us for the Rosary at 6:30 pm in the day chapel.  This should be a quick meeting and, as I understand it, Tony Rogers is getting us food.  So, you don’t wanna miss the last hurrah of the year.

What.A.Night!!

Last night was the hit of the season.  I have to say, this is the best Christmas Party I’ve been to in quite some time.  They say good company, good food, and great music makes the difference.  That certainly proved to be the case last night.

A special thanks go out to our Grand Knight Joe Suminski and his lovely wife Sue.  Tremendous planning and thought went into making last night the special time it was.  Along with Ron and Judy Stec, they were the advance team to get the place decorated and set up.

Joe MC’ed the event handing out several awards.

Knight of the Month, Deacon Kurt Godfryd.  Deacon Kurt is a tremendous asset to our community and is present at many celebrations, Masses, Baptisms and special events.  He’s very generous with his time and faith.

The Family of the Month, Mark and Sandy DiPaola.  Mark and Sandy are present and help with so many of our programs.  It’s rare to not have them there to help out.

Since this is a dual purpose event, Christmas Party AND Ladies Appreciation Night, Joe named Pat Bianchi as our 2017 Lady of the Year.  And, since Pat and her hubby Bernie are seldom seen alone, Pat and Bernie are also our 2017 Family of The Year.  Pat and Bernie are involved in many ministries at St Clement, from the food pantry to McRest and still finding time to help the Knights.

  

This year’s Knight of the Year is none other than Steve Betka.  Steve has been a leader in our Council for many years.  He’s held several officer positions; Advocate, Deputy Grand Knight, Grand Knight and now Chancellor.  He the ringmaster for the Polish Dinner and leads our many parking lot efforts.  He’s literally the chief cook and bottle washer.  Thank you, Steve, for all your continued generosity.

Joe and Ron Stec honored our fallen brothers this year.  We lost both Ace Cudillo and Ed Walla.  Our tradition is to add a Christmas bulb on our tree.

On a lighter note, everyone was thrilled Lester has regained his mojo!  Welcome back, Lester!

On a side note, a few of us hardcore fans are off to see Star Wars, The Last Jedi on Thursday in Romeo at 7 pm.  It’s not on the “office” council calendar but…  We’d love to have you join us.  If you’re interested, I suggest you BUY YOUR TICKETS WELL IN ADVANCE.  This is the biggest movie of the year!  I guess it’s time to get my Jar Jar Binks costume out of storage!

It’s that time!  Tonight’s the night. It’s the Knights of Columbus Christmas Party and Ladies Appreciation Night. Many of us will be attending 5 pm Mass at St Clement before heading over.  Thanks to everyone that RSVP’ed.  I’ll see you all tonight at the Capital Banquet Center on 31 Mile Road.

Proud to announce our 5th grandson Declan Fetherman finally arrived on December 5 at 6:27 pm weighing 7.14 lbs and 20 in long. We are all very happy the little guy is here safe and sound. We’re feeling blessed this Christmas!  Thank you to everyone for asking about him in an email, text or on Facebook.

My wife’s brother Gaspare had a heart attack last evening around the time of our meeting and survived the event. He isn’t out of the woods as he will need a bypass in the coming days. For now, he is intensive care with a stent placed.

Santa’s Left The Building

Well, the Big Red Jolly One graced us with his presence last Sunday.   All the kids had a great time and we served many breakfasts.  Lot’s of requests were offered.   Santa even entertained a few requests from the membership.  I got a note later saying there will be more lumps of coal this year than last year.  Tough luck Jim Parker!  🙂

Holy Cross Children’s Services – Done

All, a big thank you to everyone helping us out this year with the HCCS Sweatshirt drive.  We put the call out on October 25th (to refresh your memory, click here.) Our illustrious District Deputy Gary Kopp gathered up our donations and, combining them with the other Councils in District 24, delivered 52 shirts and $420 in gift cards.  A stellar job. Thank you, everyone!

It’s amazing what happens when everyone contributes just a little.  Big things happen.

Christmas with Santa This SUNDAY

This Sunday the Knights will be hosting a Free Breakfast with Santa after the 9 and 11 am Masses ONLY. We could use a little help with the usual things, cooking, bussing, set up, clean up and other things. Like I said earlier, Santa couldn’t bring his elves due to union rule restrictions. If you could show up and help us out, not only would the kids appreciate it, but, Santa will be watching. He’s always watching! #NoCoalThisYear

Updates From K of C @ St Clement

Happy Thanksgiving…

Good evening Friend, I hope you’re with family and friends today. Today’s a time to pause and reflect on all the blessings and people in our world. It’s my wish that you’re cup is full of all the best today. This community has certainly been a blessing to me. It’s interesting that the more you put into a group like this, the more you get out. Crazy right?

I’m on my way to Florida right now. I’m sitting at the Red Wings bar in the North Terminal. With luck and a few prayers, my daughter will give birth to a healthy little baby boy. I’ll post pictures in a few.

Santa will be showing up for breakfast (after all Masses) Sunday, Dec 3. We are providing free breakfast to all. We could certainly use a hand. As I understand it, Santa will not be bringing his elves so, it’s kinda up to us. He said having the elves work is some sort of union violation. Come out and help, you definitely want to avoid that lump of coal again this year! Am I right?

Social Night was a success. We had a good turn out and everyone had a good time. Watch the bulletin for the next opportunity to get together.

Speaking of an opportunity to get together, our Christmas party is December 9th at Capital Banquet. Joe had the wisdom to hire a GREAT BAND. Wayward Wind has been a staple in the Romeo area for many years. if you’ve had the opportunity to attend a performance, you know exactly what I’m talking about. They will absolutely take what is normally a good time, to the next level. I hope everyone can make it. It’s the K of C highlight of the year. PLEASE RSVP —> click here! <— PLEASE respond by Dec 1st so we can dial-in the food and beverages. And, by popular demand, NO Raffle this year. We’ll do the normal 50/50 but we’ll focus on spending time together versus a protracted raffle.

Christmas Card Sales kick off this weekend. Please see Jim in the Narthex. Our weekends to sell have been reduced so we have to make the most of the next couple weeks. If you need cards or any of the holiday things Jim lines up, please stop by.

Tilson Street Parking Lot – thanks to everyone that showed up and helped us run the Tilson Street parking lot. We had a good turn out and lots of people parking with us this year. This event adds a substantial amount of money to further the good works of the Council.

Memorial Mass – we had our annual Memorial Mass a couple Friday’s ago. We had roughly double the turn out from last year. Jim Burns did an excellent job organizing this event. Fr Doc was our celebrant. He always does such a great job.

Finally, I had an absolutely unbelievable adventure at the Father Solanus Casey Beatification Mass over the weekend. I’ll tell you that story later. Till then!

Lucia Hodur, age 89 of Washington Township, passed away Thursday, November 16, 2017 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Warren. She was born January 22, 1928 the daughter of Gregory and Helen (Bajas) Targonski in Rudce, Poland. She married her husband Jozef Hodur on July 27, 1947 in Austria. Lucia worked at Glendale Meat Processing on St. Aubin in Detroit for many years.
She was a member of St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church and had a great affinity of the Blessed Mother. Lucia was an amazing cook, enjoyed gardening, and loved spending time with her family.

Lucia is survived by her two beloved sons Stanley (Dona) of Roseville and Joseph E. (Lynn) of Shelby Twp., her beloved grandchildren Stacey Hodur, Wendy Smith, Marie (Ryan) Phillips, Joseph (Becky) Hodur, Jennette (Mike) Wrobel, Lana Hodur and eight great-grandchildren Miranda Smith, Marian and Cyrus Phillips, Joey, Kate and Dave Hodur, Paityn and Avery Wrobel. Also surviving sisters Maria (Jan) Gorniak of Troy and Sophie Dembinski of Grosse Isle. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jozef in 2009 and one brother Zigmunt.

Visitation will be held Sunday, November 19, 2017 from 2:00-8:00PM with the Rosary to be said at 7:00pm at the Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass will be said at 10:00am Monday, November 20, 2017 at St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church, (343 S. Main Romeo, MI 48065.) Burial will be made at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Twp. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution may direct them to the Humane Society of Michigan. Arrangements entrusted to Roth-Muir Funeral Home (296 S. Main St.-Romeo.)
